2006 production of "The Spirit of Aspy Bay"

A modern-day Mary Fricker (Kerianne Dowling) hustles lobster traps stolen from Neil's Harbour fishermen to tourists as her less-than-enthusiastic partners in crime Hughie MacDonald (Garry MacDonald) and Joanie (Annie Walsh) await the outcome of the negotiation during a performance of "The Spirit of Aspy Bay" currently running at the United Church in Cape North.

Aspy 2

Due to poor roads, travel to and from Northern Cape Breton was usually conducted by sea. From 1910 - 1964 the The Aspy, Aspy 2, and Aspy 3 served the northern ports, providing a vital twice weekly connection to the outside world. However, this service was seasonal as winter storms and spring drift ice prevented sea travel.

Bountiful Sea

Abundant marine life brought the earliest seasonal visitors to the North Highlands in the 1500s and before. The early pioneers were, and their ancestors to this day are, sustained by the sea. Harvesting methods inevitably change and our exhibit illustrates how it used to be.

Building a Good Home

Acquiring materials and building homes, wharves, and the many other structures essential to pioneer life was hard, but craftsmanship was important and the work a labour of love. Our collection of early tools gives a glimpse how a good home was built.
