Due to poor roads, travel to and from Northern Cape Breton was usually conducted by sea. From 1910 - 1964 the The Aspy, Aspy 2, and Aspy 3 served the northern ports, providing a vital twice weekly connection to the outside world. Abundant marine life brought the earliest seasonal visitors to the North Highlands in the 1500s and before. The early pioneers were, and their ancestors to this day are, sustained by the sea.
